What will it be like?

Mindfulness is a stunningly simple concept which is surprisingly hard to master! To be a friendly observer of your thoughts and feelings rather than reacting to them or following them. Meditation is used to practice the attitude. Its roots are in Buddhist principles but the techniques have been extracted from this context for secular use. Studies have shown that mindfulness reduces stress regardless of the stress triggers.

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is recommended by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence as a well-evidenced intervention for those who suffer mild to moderate recurrent depression but are not currently unwell. It has been shown to help prevent relapse into depression. It incorporates more formal teaching with mindfulness practice. The aim is still to turn towards your thoughts, feelings and experiences instead of avoiding or reacting. In MBCT however there is a stronger emphasis on acknowledging difficult thoughts without making judgements.

CBT is a therapy that helps a person identify and move out of the vicious cycles they have become trapped in. It retrains people to see and step back from patterns of automatic negative thinking and to develop new habits of responding. There is extensive evidence for it helping across most mental health conditions - anxiety, depression, phobias, anger etc and it is the most widely used psychotherapy in the NHS.
